Yes, a specialist electricity tariff can cut an air source heat pump’s running costs. It is most likely to help when enough household use falls in cheap periods to outweigh any peak-rate use.
The result also depends on the normal rate, standing charge, heat-pump efficiency, household routines and any cost of leaving an existing contract.
Can a specialist heat pump tariff cut costs?
The answer comes from the weighted average price across the day. Six very cheap hours can still cost more overall if the remaining rate is high and most use sits outside them.
Current offers generally price electricity through the home’s main meter. Cooking, appliances, electric-vehicle charging and battery charging can therefore affect the result. Check whether the discount appears as a lower unit rate or as a credit added to the bill later.

Fixed, variable and time-of-use tariffs are different things
“Fixed” and “variable” explain whether rates can change during the contract. “Single-rate” and “time-of-use” explain whether the price changes during the day. A heat-pump tariff can combine either pair.
From 1 July to 30 September 2026, Ofgem’s average Direct Debit electricity rate for a default tariff in Great Britain is 26.11p/kWh, including VAT, plus a 57.19p daily standing charge. These are national averages, not a quote. The next cap period is due to be announced by 26 August 2026.

This comparison is a starting point, not a ranking. Terms and advertised rates were checked on 24 July 2026. Ask for a postcode-specific quote and read the contract before switching.

An older offer can remain visible in search results after availability changes. OVO’s official forum was updated on 16 February 2026 to say Heat Pump Plus had not been available since 1 February 2026, so it is not included as a live option here.
A dynamic tariff is another option. Agile Octopus publishes half-hourly prices and warns that they can reach 100p/kWh, so it requires much closer scheduling.
Why does a smart meter matter?
Most specialist tariffs need half-hourly readings to allocate each unit to the correct price period.
Citizens Advice explains:
Time-of-use tariffs use the readings to charge different rates at different times of day.
The meter must also communicate with the supplier. EDF says data problems can block sign-up. British Gas may move customers after a prolonged loss of readings, while Octopus may estimate limited gaps. Check the proposed supplier’s missing-data rules.
Do you need to schedule hot water?
No. A heat pump does not itself require hot-water scheduling. On a single-rate tariff, changing the time does not change the unit price.
On a time-of-use tariff, a cylinder can store cheap-period heat for later. Space heating is less flexible: a long shutdown can cool the home and create a harder recovery.
Energy Saving Trust says:
Keeping a steady temperature, running your heat pump for longer periods and lowering flow temperatures can improve efficiency and reduce costs.
A modest “set-back” may be better than a shutdown. This means lowering the target temperature rather than switching the system off. Colder overnight air can reduce efficiency, although a sufficiently low overnight rate may still compensate.
Most conventional hot-water cylinders, unlike thermal stores, need a periodic high-temperature cycle to control Legionella bacteria. Do not disable it to chase a cheap rate. Ask the installer or manufacturer whether it can safely run in a cheaper period.
How to compare the full cost before switching
Collect a full year of use. Half-hourly smart-meter data shows when electricity was used. Otherwise, start with 12 months of bills.
Price every band. Multiply the units in each period by its rate, then add the annual standing charge.
Add costs and credits. Include any exit fee and apply credits as the supplier actually calculates them.
Test winter and peak use. Check a cold period, especially 4pm–7pm where a peak premium applies.
Include the whole household. Add appliances, vehicles, batteries and immersion-heater use.
Check eligibility and failure rules. Confirm evidence requirements, payment method, data consent and treatment of missing readings.
A useful calculation is:
Annual cost = electricity in each rate band × its rate + standing charges + exit fees − tariff credits
Use the same consumption pattern for every tariff. Supplier saving illustrations are based on assumptions, not household-specific forecasts.
When could a simple single-rate tariff cost less?
A single-rate tariff may cost less when the home uses heavily during expensive hours, cannot shift hot water, faces an exit fee or has unreliable smart-meter communication.
This is an inference from the rate structures, not an official threshold. The break-even point differs by postcode, tariff version and usage. Citizens Advice recommends checking that the off-peak hours match when energy is needed.

The Ofgem figures and this tariff comparison relate to Great Britain, not Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland has a separate market; the Consumer Council maintains a table of available tariffs and updates it when price changes take effect.
When should you seek professional input?
Ask the supplier to confirm eligibility, meter compatibility, rates and terms. Ask the installer or manufacturer about heating curves, hot-water timing, set-backs and safety cycles before changing controls. An independent energy adviser can help compare usage data.
